This is the third studio album by English heavy metal band Iron Maiden.  It was released on 22 March 1982 in the United Kingdom by EMI Records and in the United States by Harvest and Capitol Records.  The album was their first to feature vocalist Bruce Dickinson and their last with drummer Clive Burr.

  • The album was inspired by a nightmare that bassist and band-founder Steve Harris had after watching the film Damien: Omen II, in addition to the poem Tam o' Shanter by Robert Burns.
  • The album attracted controversy, particularly in the United States, due to the lyrics of the title track and the cover art depicting Eddie controlling Satan like a puppet, while Satan is also controlling a smaller Eddie.
  • Despite the controversy, the album was a commercial success, reaching number one in the UK Albums Chart and number 23 in the US Billboard 200. It has been certified 6x platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
  • The album is considered to be one of the most important and influential heavy metal albums of all time. It has been praised by critics and fans alike for its powerful music, Dickinson's soaring vocals, and Harris's dark and imaginative lyrics.

The album was produced by Martin Birch, who also produced the band's previous two albums, "Iron Maiden" and "Killers". The album's cover art was created by Derek Riggs, who has designed most of the band's album covers.

The Number of the Beast is a classic heavy metal album that helped to define the genre. It is a must-listen for any fan of heavy metal music.
