Cake's third studio album, Prolonging the Magic, was released on October 6, 1998, by Capricorn Records. It marked a bit of a departure from the band's previous work, with a less sarcastic and more earnest tone. The album did however retain the band's signature quirky style and wit.

Prolonging the Magic was recorded after the departure of guitarist Greg Brown and features a rotating lineup of musicians to replace him. Despite the lineup changes, the album was a critical and commercial success, selling over one million copies and reaching number 33 on the Billboard 200 chart. The only single released from the album, "Never There", was also a success, reaching number 11 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.

The album is full of great tracks, but some of the highlights include the opening track "Satan Is My Motor", the sardonic "You Turn the Screws", and the beautiful ballad "When You Sleep". Prolonging the Magic is a great album that showcases Cake's unique blend of alternative rock, experimental rock, and alternative country.
