Kansas's sixth studio album, Monolith, was released in May 1979. It was their third straight studio album to reach the Billboard Top 10, peaking at number 10. The album is considered a progressive rock masterpiece, showcasing the band's exceptional musicianship and songwriting prowess. It features iconic tracks such as "People of the South Wind" and "On the Other Side."

Monolith was produced by the band themselves and was recorded at Axis Studios and Apogee Studios in Atlanta, Georgia. The album cover art was created by Bruce Wolfe.

The album was initially met with mixed reviews, but it has since been reappraised as a classic of the progressive rock genre. In a 2019 review for AllMusic, reviewer Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote that "Monolith is a strong album that holds its own with Kansas' other classic releases."
