The album was recorded in Holywell, County Fermanagh, Ireland. The album was produced by Electric Octopus and mixed by John Davis at Eden Studios in London. The album's cover art was designed by Electric Octopus. St. Patrick's Cough is a continuation of Electric Octopus's signature sound, which blends elements of psychedelic rock, stoner rock, and jazz. The album features long, improvised jams that are both heavy and melodic. The album also features a number of guest appearances, including saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings and vocalist Maria Mazzotta. St. Patrick's Cough was met with positive reviews from critics.
