The Captain and Me is the third studio album by the American rock band The Doobie Brothers, released on March 2, 1973. The album was a commercial success, reaching number two on the Billboard 200 chart and spawning three hit singles: "Long Train Runnin'", "China Grove", and "Without You". The album was also a critical success, with many critics praising its blend of rock, country, and blues.

The album was recorded at Warner Bros. Studios in North Hollywood, California, and produced by Ted Templeman. The lineup for the album consisted of Tom Johnston (guitar, vocals), Patrick Simmons (guitar, vocals), Michael McDonald (keyboards, vocals), Tiran Porter (bass), Keith Knudsen (drums), and John Hartman (drums).

The album's title track, "The Captain and Me", is a country-rock ballad about a man who is trying to find his way in life. "Long Train Runnin'" is a hard rock song about a long, endless train that is always moving forward. "China Grove" is a funky soul song about a small town in California. "Without You" is a slow, acoustic ballad about unrequited love.

The Captain and Me is considered one of the Doobie Brothers' best albums. It was certified double platinum by the RIAA in 1984. The album has been praised by critics for its blend of rock, country, and blues, and its catchy melodies. The album has also been credited with helping to popularize the genre of Southern rock.
