Lynyrd Skynyrd is an American rock band formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1964. The band's name is a misspelling of Leonard Skinner, the principal of Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, whom the band's members had a conflict with.
The band's original lineup consisted of Ronnie Van Zant (lead vocals), Gary Rossington (guitar), Allen Collins (guitar), Larry Junstrom (bass guitar), and Bob Burns (drums). The band released their debut album, (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd), in 1973. The album was a critical and commercial success, and featured the singles "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird".
