This album was released on September 1, 1989.  It is the band's sixth studio album.  It reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States and was certified 8x platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).  It spawned five singles: "Dr. Feelgood", "Kickstart My Heart", "Without You", "Same Ol' Situation (S.O.S.)", and "Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)".  The album was produced by Bob Rock, who also produced the band's previous album, Theatre of Pain (1985).
Dr. Feelgood is considered to be one of the most popular and influential albums of the 1980s hair metal era.

The album's title track, "Dr. Feelgood", is a hard rock song about a drug dealer who promises to provide his customers with a "feelgood" experience. The song was a commercial success, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States.

The second single from the album, "Kickstart My Heart", is a faster-paced hard rock song about a man who is brought back to life by a defibrillator. The song was also a commercial success, reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The other singles from the album were all successful on the charts, with "Without You" reaching number eight, "Same Ol' Situation (S.O.S.)" reaching number nine, and "Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)" reaching number 10.

Dr. Feelgood is a critically acclaimed album, with many critics praising the band's musicianship and songwriting. The album has been ranked as one of the greatest albums of all time by several publications, including Rolling Stone, Spin, and Q Magazine.
