HIFI CLUB: Toulon, France.
Collaboration is an essential ingredient to this open band’s creative approach, forming a recurring theme in Hifiklub’s extensive discography and filmography. Based in Toulon, the hyperactive experimental rock collective offer a diverse ever-evolving catalogue that now boasts over 200 artist collaborations since they started in 2006.
In 2017, to mark the tenth anniversary of Hifiklub, the Toulon-based group invited Canadian artist James Kerr (aka Scorpion Dagger), who created a short, original video made of digital collages of Renaissance works. This unique project, initially conceived as a one-off encounter, ultimately fostered rich exchanges that have given rise to the much larger ScorpKlub project, offering a fresh perspective—through the use of contemporary techniques—on the remarkable collection of ancient art at the Toulon Museum of Art.
In practice, Hifiklub responds musically to James Kerr's digital collages, which playfully reinterpret some twenty ancient works from the museum's collection, spanning the 15th to the early 20th centuries. While the visual transformation and editing took place in James Kerr's Montreal studio, the musical component was developed in two stages:
– With the remote participation of Iggor Cavalera (MixHell, Cavalera Conspiracy, Pet Brick, co-founder of Sepultura), the first recording session was held in late January 2021 at Coxinhell Studio in Saint-Aygulf. Ten original compositions were recorded there, accompanied by ten videos by James Kerr. – With the remote participation of Alain Johannes (Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures, Eleven), a second stage took place in Toulon on July 2nd and 3rd, 2021, during the Murex Festival. This live sound research and recording session was conducted in front of a series of ten more extravagant videos by James Kerr.
