It is the sixth studio album by American alternative metal band Deftones. It was the first album to feature bassist Sergio Vega, who replaced original bassist Chi Cheng. The album was inspired by Cheng's car accident in 2008, which left him in a coma. The album was a critical and commercial success, reaching number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States. It has been certified gold by the RIAA.
The album spawned four singles: "Diamond Eyes", "Rocket Skates", "Sextape", and "You've Seen the Butcher". The album is considered to be a return to form for Deftones, after the more experimental sound of their previous album, Saturday Night Wrist. It features a more aggressive and heavy sound, while still incorporating the band's signature melodic elements.
