Sorcerer is an album by American jazz trumpeter Miles Davis, released on May 1, 1967 on Columbia Records. It is the third of six albums recorded by Davis' second great quintet, which also featured Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums.
The album was recorded at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in New York City on May 1, 2, and 3, 1967. The title track, "Sorcerer," was composed by Hancock and is a modal piece in 5/4 time. The other tracks are all original compositions by Shorter, with the exception of "Pee Wee," which was recorded by Davis in 1962 with vocalist Bob Dorough.
Sorcerer is a transitional album in Davis' career. It marks the end of his experimentation with modal jazz and the beginning of his fusion period. The album is characterized by its use of complex rhythms, extended improvisation, and electronic instruments.
Sorcerer was a critical and commercial success. It reached number 15 on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified gold by the RIAA. The album has been praised by critics for its innovative sound and its influence on jazz fusion.
