The Cult is the sixth studio album by English rock band The Cult, released in 1994. It is also commonly referred to as the "Black Sheep" record, due to the image of a Manx Loaghtan black sheep on the front cover.

The album was a commercial disappointment, peaking at only #50 on the Billboard 200 chart in the US. However, it has since been reappraised by critics and fans, and is now considered to be one of the band's best albums.

The album features a more experimental sound than the band's previous albums, with elements of alternative rock, electronica, and psychedelia. The songs are also more personal and introspective, reflecting the band's struggles with drug addiction and depression.

The album was produced by Rick Rubin, who helped the band to achieve a more polished and commercial sound. However, some fans criticized the album for being too slick and overproduced.

The album spawned four singles: "Gone", "Real Grrrl", "Black Sun", and "Star". None of the singles were major hits, but "Gone" did reach #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.

The Cult toured extensively in support of the album, but the tour was marred by drug addiction and infighting within the band. The band eventually disbanded in 1995.

The Cult reunited in 1999 and have released four more albums since then. However, they have never been able to recapture the success of their early albums.

The album The Cult is a challenging and rewarding listen. It is not for everyone, but it is a true gem for fans of alternative rock and psychedelic music.
