Free Jazz is one of the legendary albums in the history of jazz. Beyond its immense interest from a strictly musical point of view, this Ornette Coleman album offers, from 1960, the first collective improvisation around a device as disconcerting as it was innovative for the time: that of placing – in the stereo mix – a first quartet on the left, and another on the right.
This manifesto album contains the potential for future avant-garde developments in jazz, including abstraction (purification of tonalities, melody, structure) and multiplicity (polyrhythm, collective improvisation), two dynamics that converge towards the abandonment of a single clearly defined line and guide the music in favor of an instinctive musical abundance.
